Cop jailed in Dinajpur for contempt of court

A court here yesterday sentenced a police official of Ghoraghat upazila to seven days jail for contempt to court. The convict was Md Habibur Rahman, acting officer in-charge of Ghoraghat police station. Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-4 in the district issued the verdict at noon in absence of the police official. Sources said, the court on September 9 directed the OC to file a case against Md Aktar Hossain and Sharifuzzaman, immediate past OC and ASI of Ghoraghat police station, on charge of providing wrong information to the court. The court also directed the OC to send a copy of the related case to the court within Thursday. As the court found the OC absent on the day, it jailed him for seven days. Contacted, Habibur Rahman said he was unaware of the verdict. Meanwhile, an assistant sub inspector and a constable of Birampur police were closed to Dinajpur Police Lines yesterday as a criminal fled from the police station early Wednesday. The closed ASI was Md Asad Ali and constable was Utpal Kumar Roy. On Tuesday afternoon, police arrested Meher Ali from his Ghatpar residence. But he managed to flee the police station unlocking the handcuff. On Wednesday, Md Mahmudul Hasan, a sub inspector (SI) of Phulbari police station in the district was also closed for publicly assaulting a local of the area. Witnesses said Mahmudul beat up the man as he advised him to avoid rough drive on his motorbike.
