Students sued, buses go off four Jessore routes
Bus owners and workers on Sunday night enforced an indefinite strike on four routes, protesting torching of a bus by the students of Jessore Science and Technology University.
Transport owners association and the motor workers' union of Jessore called the strike on Jessore-Kushtia, Jhenidah, Meherpur and Chuadanga routes.
Meanwhile, Sharifuzzaman, owner of the damaged bus, filed a case, accusing around 150 students, said Golam Rahman, officer in-charge at Kotwali police station.
Vehicular movement was normal yesterday except on Kushtia and Jhenidah routes during the strike, said the OC.
Several hundred students of the university blocked Jessore-Jhenidah highway at Shantola in Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the driver of a bus that ran over two of their fellows.
They also torched a bus of Garai paribahan in the area during the demonstration.
Two students were killed as a Jessore-bound bus from Garai rammed their motorbike on the highway on September 5.
Azizul Alam Mintu, president of Bangladesh Paribahan Sangistha Shramik Samity, Jessore unit, said. That the strike would continue till the security of buses plying on the routes was ensured, he added.
