Police swoop on BNP-led 18-party protesters

Police intercepted a procession by BNP led 18-party alliance district unit, charged baton on the participants and took away banners from them yesterday. The alliance brought out the procession in the district town in the morning as part of their countrywide agitation programme against partisan politics, rising criminalism, corruption and bank scams. When the protesters reached near Sonali Bank branch at DB Road, a police contingent swooped on them. After an altercation and scuffle between the cops and agitators, police snatched away the banners and tore them off. Later they started charging baton on the demonstrators to disperse them, leaving seven activists of both BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami injured. Police also picked up BNP district president Anisuzzaman Khan Babu and Jamaat-e-Islami district ameer Dr. Abdur Rahim Sarker. However, they were released as the activists put up a barricade on the road. After the incident, a meeting was held on Gaibandha Shaheed Miner premises. The speakers at the meeting protested police action on peaceful demonstration. Away in Gopalganj, at least 15 activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were injured as police charged baton on their procession yesterday, reports our correspondent. The BNP student front brought out the procession in the morning to congratulate the newly formed JCD central body. Police also arrested Russell, 22, Rajib, 21, and Raju, 20 from the spot. District Chhatra Dal President Sheikh Reaz Uddin Lipton said district JCD brought out a precession from Miapara area in the city. When the activists reached Kalibari intersection, police swooped on the precession, leaving 15 people injured. Mikail Hossain and Zyad Hossain, municipal joint convener, Sangram, Sadar upazila convener and Aman, convener of city unit of JCD were among the injured. Zakir Hossain, officer in-charge of Sadar police station, said they arrested three people on charge of bringing out procession with prior permission.
