Teachers lock classrooms, take out processions

Week-long strike to realise 17-pt demand, including nationalisation of job

Teachers and employees of non-government high school in Barisal division yesterday started a week long strike to press home their 17-point demand including nationalisation of job. Their other demands include implementation of time-scale and enhancement of medical allowance and house rent. Barisal divisional units of Bangladesh Shikkhak Samity and Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Parishad Barisal jointly gave the strike call. In the city, teachers of different non-government high schools locked the school gates and classrooms in the morning. They later took out a procession in the city held a rally in front of the Shikkha Bhaban. Chaired by Abdul Malek, district unit president of Bangladesh Shikkhak Samity, the rally was addressed by Faridul Alam Jahangir, secretary of the unit, Tofael Ahmad, vice-president, Halim Mia, joint secretary, HM Jasimuddin, Barisal city unit president of Shikkhak Samity, and AB Tofazzal Hossain, organising secretary of the unit. The speakers demanded that the government nationalise their job without futher delay. Otherwise, they threatened to go for an indefinite strike. They also urged the government to end discrimination in education sector and keep all educational institutions free from political influence.
