An Awami League man, a BNP leader and a Jubo Dal activist were killed and at least 41 others injured in clashes in Khulna and Pabna on Eid day and yesterday. In Khulna, two people were killed and another was injured in a clash between the activists of AL and BNP over establishing supremacy in Dighalia upazila of the city on Monday morning. The deceased were Oliar Munshi, 60, vice president of Gazirhat union BNP, and Noor Islam Sheikh, 50, an activist of AL and inspector of Bangladesh Rural Development Board in the upazila, reports a correspondent. The injured, Shanta, 18, was admitted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital in critical condition. Locals said, there was a longstanding conflict between Noor Islam and Oliar over establishing supremacy in the area. Police said the clash ensued hours after an altercation between the two rivals at around 9:30am. Supporters of Oliar equipped with lethal weapons chased Noor Islam and his men when they were going to Dakkhinpara Eidgah maidan at PadmaBila village. The attackers stabbed Noor Islam and his son Shanta mercilessly, leaving them critically injured when they took shelter at the residence of one Razzak Master. As the news spread, followers of Noor Islam attacked Oliar, leaving him seriously injured. The injured were rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared the duo dead, said Ali Newaz, officer in-charge at Dighalia police station. According to our Pabna correspondent, a Jubo Dal man was killed and at least 40 people were injured as the activists of AL and BNP clashed at Koitala village in Bera upazila yesterday afternoon. At least 15 houses were also damaged during the clash. The dead was identified as Idan Mirza, 30, son of Mirza Baset of Joynagar village. Police said an altercation took place between two rival groups--one led by local BNP leader Mirza Gong and another by AL leader Sarkar Gong--over previous enmity. At one stage, the rivals attacked each other with lethal weapons at around 12:30pm, leaving Idan dead on the spot and at least 40 from both sides injured, said ASP Md Abu Naser. “The AL men attacked Idan, killing him on the spot when he was sitting in a shop at the village”, said Roich Uddin, secretary of upazila unit BNP.
