Human chain, rally for arrest of acid thrower

Several hundred people of the city yesterday formed a human chain in front of Rangpur Press Club, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of a stalker who allegedly threw acid on a schoolgirl. They also held a protest rally after the human chain. Victim Masuda Aktar Moni, 15, is daughter of Mokbul Islam of South Babukha area in the city and student at Samaj Kalyan Bidyabithi School. The protesters said Ariful Islam and his accomplices Alal, Arefin and Dulal used to tease the girl on her way to school. The four gathered in front of Moni's house on Monday night. After sometime, Ariful entered Moni's room and threw acid on her when she was asleep. The girl was rushed to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital in critical condition. Later she was shifted to Acid Survivors' Foundation at Dhaka as her condition deteriorated. Among others, Sohel Rana Imon, president of Students Association of Rangpur division, Rafiqul Islam Mukul, vice president of National Socialist Party and Najmul Alam Khairul Anam Khokon, teacher at the school, spoke. A case was filed in this connection, said Altaf Hossain, officer in-charge at Kotwali police station. Mokbul Hossain, investigation officer of the case, said they were conducting drives in different areas to arrest the culprits. On Wednesday, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, deputy commissioner of Rangpur Jasim Uddin Ahmed and Binoy Krisna Bala, DIG of police for Rangpur range, visited acid victim Moni in the capital.
