A few days ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, the markets as well as the makeshift shops at footpaths in the district town are abuzz with shoppers in search of suitable dresses and other items for themselves and near and dear ones. However, a large number of them are returning without buying anything after failing to make it up with their limited budget. The sale of saris, garments, cosmetics, shoes, sandals, gold ornaments and gifts products has risen at Club Super Market, Modern Market, DC Market, Abdul Mnnan Sentu Market and Puraton Bazar market, shop owners said. Mostly well off people, who are in search of latest fashions, designs and colours, are coming to these markets, they said. Both buyers and sellers said the prices of saris, shirts, jean pants and other popular dresses are higher than the last year's. Cotton saris are priced from Tk 700 to Tk 4,500, jamdani from Tk 3000 to 25,000, benarasi from Tk 3000 to Tk 30,000, Tangail sari from Tk 800 to Tk 4,500 while katans from Tk 4,000 to Tk 25,000, said sellers. Cotton and silk punjabis, priced from Tk 500 to Tk 3500, are very popular this year. Girl's popular dresses jhilik, tapur-tupur, khusi, protigga and lehenga are priced from Tk 1,000 to 6,500. 'Three piece' of girl dress is priced between Tk 500 to 5000 while boys' dresses are priced between Tk 500 to Tk 2,500, said the sellers. "We are not satisfied with sales this year. Many people returned without buying anything after hearing the prices," said Monwar Ali Mintu, owner of a garment shop at Club Super Market. Customers from middle income groups have expressed dissatisfaction over high price of products. "The price is too much this year. Earlier a budget of Tk 3000 was enough to buy clothes for our four-member family for the Eid but it is no longer possible now. After roaming around a good number of shops, I bought two dresses from Club Super Market for my two school going daughters,” said Anwara Khatun, a schoolteacher of Chapainawabganj town. Hawkers have also erected makeshift shops beside roads where mostly the people of low-income groups are thronging to buy dresses and other goods on the occasion of Eid.
