25 injured in clashes over land disputes

At least 25 people were injured as rival villagers clashed in Gaibandha and Rangpur districts over disputed lands yesterday and the day before. At least 17 people were injured in a clash between two groups over capturing khas land at Bhati Kapasia village in Sunderganj upazila of Gaibandha yesterday, reports our correspondent. Locals said a group of landless people had been living on 4 plots of khas land in Kapasia shoal areas for long. They were preparing to cultivate aman seedlings on the lands. Yesterday, land grabber Musa Mia of village Chandipur in the upazila along with about 100 hired goons attacked the landless peasants with deadly weapons to vacate the land. The gang beat up the family members of the landless peasants, injuring 17. In Rangpur, eight people were hacked during a feud over land at Manshinghapur Pulpara village under Radhanagar union at Badarganj upazila on Wednesday afternoon, reports our correspondent. The injured were identified as Abdul Kader, 48, Amjad Hossain, 80, father of Abdul Kader, Shahinur Begum, 43, wife of Abdul Kader, Nur-e-Jannat Sumi, 22, daughter of Abdul Kader and his brother Mitaleb Hossain Babu, 25, Saiful Islam, 50, Rashidul Islam, 38, and Jaber Islam, 42. Police and locals said, Abdul Kader purchased 70 decimals of land from his uncle Tobarok Ali. But Azizar Rahman and Abdur Rauf, another two uncles of Kader, objected. There was a longstanding dispute between Kader and his uncles over the matter. The rival groups locked in an altercation over the matter on Wednesday afternoon. At one stage, Azizar, Rauf and their men hacked Kader and others with sharp weapon, leaving them critically injured.
