Workers at Bangladesh Fertiliser Association (BFA) godown at Mohendro Nagar village in Sadar upazila yesterday withdrew their indefinite strike after the authorities agreed to meet their demand. Loading and unloading of fertilizers resumed at the godown after the fruitful talks. Abdul Hakim, president of district Fertilizer Dealer Association, said the workers called the strike on Saturday, demanding a fair wage system. “The workers were paid fifty paisa for loading and unloading of each sack of fertiliser instead of Tk one by the contractor” Monzur Alam, 55, who has been working at the godown for the last 20 years, said “The contractor is misappropriating 50 percent of our wage for long”. The workers' leader Kashem Ali said, the strike was called off following a fruitful meeting between the association leaders and the authorities. “We always wanted to talk with the godown authorities on wage issue instead of the contractor”, he said. Hanif Mia, executive engineer of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) and in-charge of the godown, said we have already cancelled the deal with the contractor. Around 45 workers load and unload some 20,000 sacks of fertiliser at the warehouse everyday, said BFA official sources.
