9 hurt as BCL Akhaura factions clash
Two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Akhaura upazila unit clashed over formation of a new committee in the upazila town on Sunday night, leaving at least nine people from both sides injured.
The clash ensued following an altercation between the BCL men of the two factions-one led by former Akhaura upazila BCL president Md Omar Farook and the other by former publication secretary of the unit Md Shariful Islamover campaign for their chosen candidates for the posts of president and secretary.
Police and BCL sources said the rival groups used lethal weapons during the clash that continued for an hour from 9:30pm. The injured, including former Akhaura pourasava (municipality) BCL general secretary Md Sakhawat Hossain, were admitted to the upazila health complex.
Several shops, houses and a motorbike were damaged during the clash. Police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.
Contacted, Md Habibur Rahman Parves, joint secretary of BCL Brahmanbaria district unit, said they will take action against the BCL men responsible for Sunday night's clash in Akhaura town.
“We will soon form a new committee of the upazila unit,” he further said.
