Land Dispute Ends in Violence
Man shot dead, houses torched in Mymensingh
A man was shot dead and two others were injured in an attack by their rivals over a land dispute at Char Belamari in Nandail upazila of the district yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abul Hashim, 45, son of late Abdur Rashid, while the injured are Hashim's mother Sokhina Khatun, 60, and brother Hares Ali, 42.
Police said there had been a dispute between Yakub Ali Master, a retired primary schoolteacher, and his nephew Abul Hashim over the ownership of a land for long.
Hashim locked in an altercation with Yakub's son Iqbal Hossain over the disputed land at around 10:00am.
Hearing the news, supporters of both Yakub and Hashim came to the spot and also had a noisy argument, police said.
At one stage, Yakub became furious and opened fire from his licensed gun, injuring Hasim, his mother Sokhina and brother Hares, police added.
Hashim succumbed to his injuries on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) while Sokhina and Hares are undergoing treatment at the hospital, said Khandaker Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station.
As the news of Hashim's death spread in the area, his supporters attacked the houses of Yakub and his son Iqbal. They also torched two houses of Yakub's supporters at the village. Yakub fled the house.
On Information, police rushed the spot and brought the situation under control. They seized Yukub's gun from his house and arrested his brother Abdul Mannan and granddaughter Hawa Begum.
Police have been deployed at the village to avert any further incident.
B' BARIA CLASH
In Brahmanbaria, two groups of villagers clashed in BanchHarampur upazila of the district yesterday, injuring at least 20 people, reports our correspondent. Police said the clash was a sequel to a long-standing rivalry between Suruj Matobbar of Belanagar village and Kamrul Matobbar of adjacent Ruposdi village over establishing supremacy in the area. Both sides used sticks, knives and spears during the clash, leaving at least 20 people from both sides injured. Suruj group also confined three supporters of Kamrul groups to a house. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They also rescued the three from confinement.
