Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists yesterday foiled the opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance programme in the city. Leaders and activists of the alliance joined a rally in front of Barisal BNP office near Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city at around 1:45pm. They organised the rally protesting submission of charge sheet against 46 opposition leaders in a vehicle arson case in the capital. Suddenly, stick-wielding BCL men, led by city BCL President Jasimuddin, reached there and swooped on the opposition activists, prompting them to retaliate. During chase and counter chase, the clashing groups also hurled brick chips at each other. Police rushed to the spot and charged batons and brought the situation under control. Shaheduzzaman, officer in-charge of Barisal Kotwali Police Station, said police dispersed the activists of both BCL and 18-party alliance to maintain law and order in the area. City BNP joint Secretary Ziauddin Shikdar said the ruling AL and their cadres attacked the peaceful rally of the opposition. Refuting the allegation, BCL city unit President Jasimuddin said they were not involved foiling the rally of the 18-party alliance. No case was filed with Kotwali Police Station in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 7:00pm yesterday.
