'Arrest criminals, or face agitation'
Several hundred villagers brought out a procession at Gheger Bazar in Saudllahpur upazila yesterday, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of a gang of criminals who have been committing various crimes in the area for long.
After the procession, they also held a press conference at Faridpur union parishad premises to explain the situation.
Nur Azam Mandol, chairman of the union, and Al-Helal Sarker, president of union Awami League, also spoke.
At the press conference, the speakers said the villagers were passing days in anxiety due to the activities of the gang, allegedly led by Saidur Rahman.
The gang recently felled at least 1,500 matured bamboo plants and 95 other trees from local Shah Farid pir's graveyard.
The gang also looted maize from the fields in the area a few days ago and threatened locals of dare consequence if they protested the incident, said the speakers.
The villagers sought cooperation from the law enforcers to bring the situation under control without much delay.
They also threatened to go for a tougher agitation programme if their demand was not met within a short time.
Monsur Rahman, officer in-charge of Sadullahpur police station, said they were conducting drives in different areas to arrest the criminals.
