48 injured as villagers clash in 2 districts

At least 48 people were injured as villagers in Sherpur and Gaibandha districts clashed yesterday and the day before. At least 25 people, including five policeman, were injured in a clash at Dobarchar village in Sadar upazila of Sherpur yesterday noon. Salahuddin Shikdar, ASP of Sherpur circle, said the clash took place between two groups of villagers over an arbitration meeting around 12:30pm, reports UNB. Equipped with lethal weapons, the two groups swooped on each other, leaving 25 people wounded from both sides. Police fired 11 tear gas shells and 18 bullets to calm the situation. Police also arrested five people from the spot. In Gaibandha, at least 23 persons were injured in a fierce clash over a disputed land at village Tiagacha in Sadullapur Upazila on Wednesday, reports our correspondent. Being informed, police rushed to the spot arrested five people. They also seized some lethal weapons. Police said there had been a long standing conflict between Khalilur Rahman Ranju and neighbour Fahim Prodhan over 1.78 acres of land. On Wednesday morning, hired goons of Khalilur Rahman started destroying aman seedlings on the disputed plots. Supporters of Fahim Prodhan protested the matter. Soon the two groups locked in a fierce clash using lethal and sharp weapons, leaving 23 people from both the groups injure. Of them Al-Amin, 16, Aminur Prodhan, 41, Sadequl Islam, 35, Lebu Mia, 30, Jarina Begum, 40, Sabina Begum, 30, were taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital in serious condition.
