A Shaheed Minar built in the compound of Ghagoa MB High School in Sadar upazila about a decade ago, itself tells the tale of indifference by the authorities. Used by locals on different national days, the condition of the lone Shaheed Minar in Ghagoa union worsened further recently after the school authorities removed some concretes of the floor and stairs to shift it to another location. The school committee took no initiative to reconstruct it despite repeated request by the local people besides teachers, students and guardians. Ghagoa union parishad recently allocated Tk 1 lakh for its reconstruction but the headmaster halted the renovation work, alleged a few teachers and students. Aminuzzaman Rinku, chairman of the union, said “We had fixed June 29 for laying the foundation stone of a new Shaheed Minar at the same location, but the school authorities foiled it for unknown reason”. Md Hamid Sikder, president of the school managing committee, said the headmaster stopped the repair work of the Shaheed Minar without any consultation with the school committee. Headmaster Mahbub Alam Kote said he wanted to shift the Shaheed Minar to another place as the space at the present location is too small to accommodate a large gathering of local people.
