Upazila chairman suspended on corruption charge

Ullapara Upazila Parishad Chairman Zahedul Haque has been suspended on charges of corruption, misuse of power and misbehaviour with the elected representatives. M Kazi Emdadul Haq, senior assistant secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD), informed Ullapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Atul Sarker of the matter through a fax message on Tuesday afternoon. On May 20, chairmen of 13 union parishads and two vice chairmen of Ullapara Upazila Parishad brought a no-confidence motion against the UZ chairman for his alleged corruption, misuse of power and misbehaviour with the elected public representatives and submitted it to Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner the following day. Divisional Commissioner Swapan Kumar Roy launched an investigation on July 12 and found the allegations against the UZ Chairman Zahedul to be true. On the basis of the investigation report, the Local Governed Division issued the suspension order on Tuesday. Vice Chairman Khalilur Rahman has been given the charge of acting upazila parishad chairman. Contacted, Zahedul termed it a conspiracy against him by a group of UP chairmen. Lawmaker Shafiqul Islam from Sirajganj-4 constituency declined to make any comment on the issue. UNO Atul Sarker said he has already sent the copies of the order to all concerned. Our Rangamati correspondent reported that the chairman of Borohorina Union Parishad (UP) under Barkal upazila has been charged with corruption. Ward members, traditional leaders (karbaries) and VGF programme beneficiaries brought the allegation against the UP Chairman, Sanjoy Moni Chakma on Wednesday. They later submitted the allegation to the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), seeking immediate action against the chairman. They alleged that UP Chairman Sanjoy embezzled money from different projects including test relief (TR), food for work, Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) and Vulnerable Group Development (VGD). The complainants include Dhono Bikash Chakma, member of ward No 6, Reboti Ranjan Chakma, member of ward No 1, Dhono Lal Chakma, member of ward No 4 and Buddha Debi Chakma, female member of ward Nos 4, 5 and 6.
