One shot dead as rival groups clash in Sunamganj
A man was shot dead while seven others were injured as two rival groups clashed at village Raibangali under Derai upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday.
Of the injured, 3 were injured by bullets and admitted to the upazila health complex.
Police said there had been a longstanding rivalry between Zahir Ali and Abdul Malik of the village over establishing supremacy in the area. As the supporters of both men locked in an altercation over an issue on Sunday last at a local market, a negotiation meeting was called yesterday morning to settle the matter.
But defying the decision, Zahir Ali's men, equipped with sticks and firearms, attacked the house of Ali Hossain, 35, all on a sudden at about 11:30am. During the gunshots, Ali Hossain died on the spot while the three others sustained bullet injuries.
Contacted, officer in-charge of Derai police station Md. Habibur Rahman said that filing of a case was in process. No arrest was made yet, he said.
In Brahmanbaria, at least 20 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Tanpara village under Akhaura municipality yesterday, reports our correspondent.
According to eyewitnesses and police, an altercation took place between two youths of Chandi village and Tanpara village, centering the buying of shoes at a shop.
Yesterday, about 40 people of Chandi village, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked Tanpara. Tanpara villagers also retaliated leaving ten shops and houses damaged.
Ten injured people were admitted to Akhaura upazila health complex and the rest others were given first aid there.
