10 hurt as Shibir, police clash

At least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and Chhatra Shibir activists in front of the municipal market in the district town around 12 noon yesterday. Police arrested 40 people, including Shibir workers, shopkeepers and pedestrians from the spot. Police and witnesses said, about 150 Shibir leaders and workers brought out a procession from Noakhali municipal building yesterday noon to welcome Ramadan and call for maintaining sanctity of the month. When they tried to hold a rally in front of the municipal market, police obstructed them. The Shibir workers pelted brickbats at police and one of them tried to snatch a rifle from a police constable, police claimed. Police charged baton on the Shibir workers to disperse them. Police constables Amirul and Md Shahjahan were injured as bricks hurled by the Shibir activists hit them. The two have been admitted to Noakhali Medical College Hospital. Eight injured Shibir workers were taken to a local clinic. Sudharam Model PS Officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Kalam said, police was compelled to charge baton as the Chhatra Shibir workers hurled brickbats at the on duty law enforcers.
