Six children drown in ponds, floodwater
Six children drowned in ponds and floodwater in four districts yesterday and the day before.
Two schoolgirls drowned in a pond near the Batiaghata upazila parishad office in Khulna yesterday, reports a correspondent.
The deceased were identified as Barsa Dey, 8, daughter of Raton Kumar Dey, a trader of Beni Babu Road in the city and Jyoti Dutta, 11, daughter of Mahadeb Dutta, a goldsmith of village Hetalbunia in the upazila.
Police and locals said, Barsa, a class three student of city's APC School went to join a wedding ceremony in Batiaghata upazila.
She along with her cousins went to the pond area at about 11:00am. Suddenly she fell into the water. Joyti, a class six student of Batiaghata Public Secondary School, also drowned in the pond as she tried to save Barsa.
In Sirajganj, two children drowned in floodwater in Shahzadpur upazila on Tuesday, reports our correspondent.
The deceased were Onti, 4, daughter of Helal Sarker of Moshipur village and Nadia Parvin, 2, daughter of Abdul Alim of Potazia village under the upazila.
Family sources said Onti, while playing in their compound, suddenly slipped into the floodwater at noon and drowned.
Body of Nadia, who went missing on Monday night, was found in the floodwater in the morning.
In Lalmonirhat, a schoolboy drowned in a pond near his house at Taluk Dulali village of Aditmari upazila Tuesday morning, reports our correspondent.
He was identified as Sohel Rana, 11, son of Nur Hossain of the village and a student of class six at Dulali High School.
Family sources said, Rana did not know how to swim.
In Barisal, a minor girl drowned in a pond at Nathullabad Fishery Road in the district town on Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Swarna, 7, daughter of hotel employee Shah Alam of the area, reports UNB.
Family sources said, Swarna slipped into deep water of the pond while taking bath along with his elder brother and three other children at noon.
Local people rescued her but she died on the way to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
