Two jailed, one for killing wife, other for seeking dowry
Two people were jailed yesterday and on Sunday, one for killing wife in Sirajganj and another for demanding dowry in Jessore.
A man was jailed for life and fined Tk. 5000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail yesterday for killing wife in Sirajganj.
Umme Kulsum, Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 pronounced the verdict, reports our correspondent.
According to the prosecution, Serajul Islam, 45, of Jamtoli village in Kamarkhand upazila married Lamia Parvin Lipi, daughter of late Mohammad Ali of Charkura village under the same upazila.
When Lipi became a mother of two, Mohammad Ali developed an extra-marital relation with another woman.
As his wife protested it, he beat her up mercilessly, following a quarrel on October 15 night 2009, leaving her dead on the spot.
Rokeya Begum, mother of the victim, lodged a murder case with Kamarkhand police.
A court in Jessore on Sunday convicted a man and sentenced him to two years' rigorous imprisonment for demanding dowry from his wife.
The convict was identified as Zakir Ali, son of Atiar Rahman of Gourinathpur village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah district, reports UNB.
According to the prosecution, Zakir married Hazera Khatun, daughter of M Atiar Rahman of Ramkrisnapur village in Chowgachha upazila of Jessore on 15 March 2007.
Zakir took Tk 25,000, along with three cows and gold ornaments and furniture as dowry from Hazera's family.
But he started torturing Hazera to bring Tk 50,000 more from her father. After beating her mercilessly, he drove her out of his house on September 4, 2010.
Later, the victim filed a case against Zakir on January 20, 2011.
After examining the records and witnesses, Chief Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Mafijur Rahman handed down the verdict.
