Our Correspondent, Netrakona
Road communication of Durgapur with Purbadhola upazila and the rest of the country snapped as a bridge at Rajabazar point of Durgapur-Mymensingh road in Purbadhola upazila collapsed yesterday afternoon. The 180-feet-long Bailey bridge over Rajakhal cannel fell down when a stone-laden truck was crossing it at around 12.30pm. Locals said they were facing a lot of troubles due to the disruption of the road communication. A large number of people, who used the bridge, are now crossing the canal by boats. No steps were taken to repair the bridge after the Department of the Roads and Highways declared its condition vulnerable three years ago, sources said. Contacted, executive engineer Jahangir Alam of Netrakona Roads and Highways office said they would take initiative soon to arrange an alternative way for movement of light vehicles. The residents of the upazilas yesterday urged the authorities to repair the bridge without much delay.
