Rainwater has started leaking through the roofs of two newly built food godowns at Khanka Sharif in the district town, thanks to the contractor concerned for their poor construction. Several cracks developed in the roofs only days before handing over the warehouses, each of a thousand metric tons capacity, to the local food office, said Saiful Islam, district food controller. Sources said, the contractor used substandard construction materials, defying the estimate and agreement of the tender. The allegation was discussed at a district law and order meeting at the deputy commissioner's conference room on June 25. At the meeting, the authorities decided to take stringent action against the persons after conducting a probe into the matter, said DC Shahidul Islam. According to the district food controller's office, the government allocated a fund of Tk three crore 39 lakh 67 thousand for the construction of the godowns in 2011-12 fiscal year and issued work order to a construction firm for being the lowest bidder. The cracks were detected in the roof following heavy rain for a few days. Water leaked and soaked through different points when the construction firm was about to hand over the warehouses to the food department. However, the department refused to receive the godowns and questioned the responsibilities of Public Works Department (PWD). Meanwhile, the construction firm engaged labourers to repair the cracks, said locals. Contacted, Abul Kashem, a supervising officer of PWD, said that development of leaks through the newly constructed roof not a major flaw and those will be repaired soon. Gaibandha PWD executive engineer Debasish Chandra Saha said, it might take 15 days to complete the renovation work of the godowns.
