Jubo League activists held on extortion charge

Police arrested three Jubo league activists in an extortion case filed with Baufal police station yesterday. The arrestees are Anisur Rahman, 35, president of ward no. 4 of Surjomoni union under Baufal upazila and Sumon, 22 and Saddam, 23, of the area. Police said the authorities of Indrokul High School recently started construction work of two buildings. Two BCL activists, allegedly led by Anisur, demanded Tk 2 lakh as toll from assistant headmaster Harun-ur-Rashid at about 11:00am. Angered by refusal, they assaulted two workers and tried to stop the construction work forcibly. As the news spread, students and locals caught the trio and gave them a good beating, leaving them injured. On information, police arrested them from the spot, said the officer in-charge of Baufal police station. Following the incident, headmaster Mizanur Rahman filed a case accusing the three activists at noon, the OC added.
