Fresh call for recognition of indigenous people

The 157th 'Santal Revolution Day' was observed in Thakurgaon and Dinajpur districts yesterday with the demands for constitutional recognition of the indigenous people. On this day in 1855, there was uprising against a martial law proclaimed by the then British rulers. The revolution was led by four Murmu Brothers - Sindhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairab. In Thakurgaon, district unit of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad in association with Eco-Social Development Organisation, RDRS Bangladesh and Karitas, chalked out a programme to mark the day, reports our correspondent. Parishad's Advisor Imran Hossain Chowdhury inaugurated the programme in front of the Liberation War memorial in the town. A colourful procession was brought out in the town. Later, the members of the parishad and different NGO workers formed a human chain on Thakurgaon Cooperative Market premises to press their nine-point demand, including constitutional recognition of the indigenous people and formation of a separate land commission for the ethnic communities living in the plain land. A discussion was also held at Thakurgaon Press Club auditorium chaired by Surjo Mormu, district unit president of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad. Among others, Babul Tigga, general secretary of the parishad, Hekob Khalpo and Imran, spoke. The discussion was followed a cultural programme where the ethnic artistes rendered their traditional songs. Dinajpur Jaitya Adivasi Parishad (JAP) organised various programmes including procession, discussion and human chain, marking the day, according to our correspondent.. At a discussion chaired by Shital Mardi, president of (JAP), the speakers said the ethnic people are yet to enjoy the social, economic and political rights though they played a vital role during 1971 Liberation War. They also urged the government taking immediate steps to meet their demands. Basanti Murmu, president of Dinajpur Adivasi Nari Parishad and Batal Tigga, an adivasi leader of the district, also spoke.
