<i>Harrowing tale of torture by Sundarbans robbers</i>

Eight days after his abduction by forest robbers, Mizanur Rahman returned home with marks of serious torture yesterday. The robbers belonging to Iliyas-Shahidul gang kidnapped Mizanur, son of Mozammel Haque of Shora village under Ramzan Nagar union of Shyamnagar upazila, when he was catching crabs at Dargang canal in Boyersing area of the Sundarbans on June 22. The abductors let go Mizanur's younger brother Mohsin Hossain who was in the same boat that time and ordered him to reach Tk 30,000 as ransom to the user of a certain mobile phone within three days. Mizanur's brothers Mohsin and Mahfuzul Haque said they reached the ransom to Moharram Gazi of Buri Goalini village, who used the specified cell phone, at the ground of BG College adjacent to the Sundarbans on June 25. At the time law enforcers from Buri Goalini River police outpost arrested Mohram Gazi and recovered the ransom money. Describing the harrowing experience of captivity, Mizanur said, "On the first day, the abductors took me to a deep jungle in the Sundarbans. There I was kept with 12 other captives in a trawler." "During the first three days the robbers waited for the ransom and did not torture me. But at one stage they said my brother had helped police to arrest one of their accomplices. They threatened to kill me by slitting the throat and throw my body into the river. "They robbers mercilessly beat me with sticks and tore flesh from my body. They tortured me for four consecutive days, leaving me unconscious. "They realised Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 from each of the 12 abducted people as ransom. Along with the 12 people, I was boarded onto a boat on Friday evening. The gang comprise about 42 members and they possess several arms and three big-sized trawlers," he added.
