Two hundred and forty-three workers, appointed through outsourcing at Barapukuria 250MW Power Plant in Parbatipur upazila under the district, have threatened to start an indefinite work abstention if their jobs are not regularised by July 5. The workers, who have been holding different programmes for the last two days, announced their agitation programme at a press conference held in front of the power plant complex at around 12:30pm yesterday. They will observe work abstention for two hours on July 1, three hours on July 2, four hours on July 3, and five hours on July 5. "If our demand is not met by July 5, we will go for indefinite work abstention," said Md Shakhawat Hossain, general secretary of Barapukuria Power Plant Workers Union, reading out the keynote at the conference. The 243 workers have been agitating for the last nine months to press the authorities to regularise their job but to no effect, the workers said. If the workers start work abstention, it might disrupt the power generation at the coal-based power plant that has been adding around 100MW power to the national grid, said sources of the power plant. Claiming that job status of these workers improved in last one year, Md Monjurul Haque, chief engineer of Barapukuria Power Plant, said, "We are concerned about the situation and informed our higher authorities of the matter."
