Poet Jasimuddin's Asmani' brought to Dhaka for treatment

AsmaniAsmani, embodiment of well known literary character portrayed in the poem 'Asmani' by Polli Kobi Jasimuddin Ahmed, was transferred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital in the capital yesterday.
With critical health conditions, Asmani, 97, was earlier undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital under the close supervision of a six-member medical board headed by Faridpur Civil Surgeon Dr Sirajul Haque Talukder.
She was in coma and suffering from old age complications, said ASM Jahangir Chowdhury, principal of Faridpur Medical College.
Earlier on last Saturday, Asmani was admitted to Faridpur General Hospital as she was attacked with brain haemorrhage and high blood pressure, said Asmani's grandson Akram Mollick.
"Different organisations including Jasim Foundation and social welfare and health departments are helping her financially. Labour and Employment Minister Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain has donated Tk 50 thousand for her treatment," said Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Helaluddin Ahmed, also president of Jasim Foundation.
A few journalists discovered 'Jasimuddin's Asmani' at Rasulpur village in Eshan Gopalpur union under Faridpur Sadar upazila in 2003, said Mafiz Imam Milon, secretary of Faridpur Sahitya Parishad.
Daughter of Arman Mollick of Bhanudangi village, Asmani was married to Hashem Mondol of nearby Rasulpur village at the age of nine. Hashem died around 20 years ago. Asmani has two sons and six daughters -- all busy with their own families now.
Symbolising a typical poverty stricken little girl with shattered dreams and broken spirits, the poem 'Asmani' was published in Jasimuddin's “Ek Poisar Banshi” in 1949.
