Fresh areas flooded in Sylhet, Lalmonirhat

Heavy rain and onrush of hill water for the last couple of days have worsened flood situation in Sylhet and Lalmonirhat. Sufferings of Sylhet city dwellers mounted as more residences and main thoroughfares went under flood water, reports our staff correspondent. Rain water submerged the streets at Shibganj, Mendibag, Shadipur, Jhalopara, Kushighat, Ghashitola, Shahjalal Upshahar and Kolapara. Besides, Bilpar, Teroratan and Shahjalal Upshahar Block C and D went under the knee-deep water, flooding a number of houses in the areas. The flood situation in Gowainghat, Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Companiganj and Golapganj upazila of Sylhet worsened as all big and small rivers including Surma and Kushiara crossed their danger marks, officials said. Road communications of Kanaighat and Gowainghat upazilas with the district headquarters snapped due to the flood water. Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj upazila complexes are under 2-3 feet water since Tuesday afternoon. Villagers in the three upazilas became marooned as all the roads went under 3 feet water. Many families took shelter at schools. According to the Water Development Board Control Room in Sylhet, the Surma was flowing 65 centimetres above the danger level at city point and 78cm at starting point of Surma and Kushiyara at Amolshid in Zakiganj upazila. The control room recorded 77 millimetres rainfall in the city and 282mm at Kanaighat till 6:00am yesterday. In Lalmonirhat, more people of low lying villages in five upazilas became marooned as fresh areas went under flood water in the last couple of days, reports our correspondent. Heavy rainfall and water rushing from hills across the border triggered the flash flood, Lalmonirhat Water Development Board sources said. The badly affected areas are Kurul, Mogholhat, Kulaghat, Bowalmari, Rajpur, Kalmati, Khuniya Gachh, Gokunda, Milon Bazar, Teesta, Etapota villages in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, Bongerbari, Sarkerbari, Dahagram, Sree Rampur, Bawra villages in Patgram upazila, Goddimari, Dowani, Sindurna, Dawabari, Paruliya, Patikapara villages under Hatibandha upazila, Bhotmari, Char Kakina, Rudreshwar, Jamirbari villages in Kaliganj upazila and Kadomtola, Balapara, Gobordhan, Balurbandh villages in Aditmari upazila. While visiting the flood affected Paruliya village in Hatibandha upazila, this correspondent found knee-deep water in the village. Many of the victims took shelter on government roads and WDB dam.
