Call to protect environment against harms

Experts urge govt at roundtable

Some experts urged the government to take necessary steps by adopting preventive actions against environmental degradation. They made the call at a roundtable titled “Conserving environment: Chittagong perspective” organised by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa), Chittagong at a hotel in the port city yesterday. Presided over by Bapa Chittagong unit President Muhammed Sekander Khan, the programme was addressed, among others, by the district unit General Sectary ABM Abu Noman, Bapa Joint Sectary architect Iqbal Habibb and General Sectary Dr Abdul Matin. They highlighted on hill cutting, harmful effects of brick kilns on environment in the southern and northern parts of the city. Nine essays relating to environment, biodiversity and climate change were presented by the respective field experts at the event. The discussants and the essay presenters raised the issues on ship breaking yard and its impact, pollution of Halda River, taking care of the Karnaphuli and stopping the pollution of the Bay of Bengal.
