Police recovered the decomposed body of a housewife yesterday from a water body at Uttara in the capital after 19 days of killing by her husband, a policeman. The victim is identified as Sumi Akhter, 19, wife of Abdul Alim Sumon, a constable working at Industrial Police of Gazipur. Police arrested Sumon and his friend Shamim Al Mamun on Tuesday in this connection. Sumon admitted to police that he killed Sumi to make a way of marrying a female constable as he had an extramarital affair with her. The body was recovered from under the water hyacinths. A scarf was found wrapping around the victim's neck. Father of the victim, Sultan Mahmud, told The Daily Star that his daughter came to his house on April 10 from Sumon's house at Kalihati of Tangail. Sumi went out from home around 8:30am on April 20 as Sumon asked her to come to Tangail bus stand. Around 9:30am, she told her mother over cell phone that she was on the way to Jamuna Bridge on a motorbike with her husband, said Sultan Mahmud. But at noon family members found Sumi's cell phone off. A GD was filed with Tangail Police Station on April 21 in this connection. Detecting Sumon and Shamim's phone numbers in victim's cell phone call lists, police arrested the two. Following their confessional statement, the body was recovered. At primary interrogation, Sumon said he took Sumi to Turag and killed her on April 20 evening. His friend helped him to commit the crime, said Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tangail Police Station.
