Former adviser to a caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman yesterday urged everyone to raise voice for immediate steps to save the dying Karnaphuli river. He was addressing as chief guest a seminar, “Save Karnaphuli, save country”, organised by Chittagong Regional Cultural Academy on a ferry of Roads and Highway Department on Karnaphuli river. Zillur said the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who recently came on a visit, termed Bangladesh as Asia's future force and Chittagong will lead Bangladesh in the international arena. He assured of collecting vital data on Karnaphuli river through his organisation, Chittagong Research Initiative, for future use by researchers. Prof Idrise Ali of Chittagong College said a river may die out in three ways, physically, chemically and ecologically, all of which are applicable on Karnaphuli's current condition. He blamed the disappearance of dolphins from the river due to the rise in the pollution level. CU Prof Monzoorul Kibria said the pollution level in the Halda river is increasing as it is connected to the Karnaphuli river, posing a threat to the breeding of freshwater fish. Former Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology vice chancellor Moozamel Haque chaired the programme where Engineer Ali Asraf and CU professors Abul Kasem and Prof Maruf Ali also spoke.
