<i>Ctg best tech school gets 'nothing' from media </i>

AK KhanUCEP Kalurghat Technical School topped the list of this year's SSC results published under Bangladesh Technical Education Board but got no media attention. All the 60 SSC examinees (38 males and 22 females) from its two departments (Electrical and Mechanical) obtained GPA-5 which is a record in the history of vocational education in the country. GPA-5 achievers of the school, however, slammed media for not giving any attention to its success. Roksana Akter, one of the GPA achievers from the school, said prominent educational institutions had got all media attention except her school. "It was not only hurt us but also a matter of shame as our success was not highlighted by any media,” she alleged. After getting result on Monday, successful students of the school gathered at the Chittagong Press Club protesting non-coverage of their success by mass media. They claimed that the news of their success should have been given first priority by the mass media in terms of vocational education in Bangladesh. Criticising silence of mass media about their SSC result, the students of the institution also formed a human chain at Cheragi Pahar intersection, where most of media houses of the port city are located, with banners and festoons that say, “We have done our best, why media you were silent.” Tarana Akter, a GPA-5 achiever of the school, said, “Though I'm from a poor family, I've proved that nothing can stop one from being successful if he or she is really laborious. I want to get further higher education and complete my BSc in the future.” Abu Siddique, another GPA-5 achiever, said he wants to overcome all difficulties that he made in his life so far. “The government and all rich people should come forward by raising their helping hands to assist the poor and under privileged children and also help them getting jobs,” he said expressing his happiness over his result. Head of the school Engineer Joy Prakash Barua said, “It's really a great achievement for us to secure the top position and at the same time a challenge to keep continuation of the success in future.” Confirming top position achieved by the school, Chairman of Technical Education Board Professor Md Abul Kasem told The Daily Star that run by foreign finance, AK KhanUCEP Kalurghat Technical School ensure modern educational and laboratory equipment and maintain quality of education which helped the SSC examinees get such brilliant result. He mentioned proper guidance of the teachers of institution to achieve the success and said it is really a good sign for technical education of Bangladesh. Students of the technical school first took part in SSC exams in 2008 and it achieved 2nd position under the board. AK KhanUCEP Kalurghat Technical School was among top ten institutions securing the 7th, 3rd and 2nd position in the last three years respectively.
