Customs officials here yesterday seized two containers full of contraband liquor, cigarette and electronic goods at Chittagong port on charge of importing illegal items under false declaration. Omar Faruk, superintendent of Audit Investigation and Revenue (AIR) branch of Chittagong Customs, said they seized the two containers each 40-foot equivalent unit and found the illegal items. The customs officials identified the consignment for doing physical examination two weeks ago as they became suspicious finding unknown name as importer of the consignment in the import document, Faruk said. One PIM MFG & Co with an address as Polashpur, Rajabari, Keraniganj, Dhaka was the importer of the consignment, according to the sources in Chittagong Customs House. The consignment was imported over one month back while the importer declared to import eight units of capital machineries, they said. The AIR superintendent said they waited for the bill of entry to be submitted by the respective clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent. As none came, the customs officials opened one container at around 12:30pm yesterday to find the contraband liquor inside it, Faruk said adding that they found 22 brands of foreign liquor, cigarette and four television sets in the first container. He said they would open the other container today.
