Chittagong teemed with myriad colours as its residents clad in vibrant attires celebrated the arrival of Pahela Baishakh, the Bangla New Year, through different programmes till Saturday. Sammilito Pahela Baishakh Udjapan Parishad hosted a two-day cultural programme at DC Hill (Nazrul Square) premises, starting off with classical songs and continuing with poetry recitations and dances by six groups of local artists. Scores arrived at Central Railway Building area to witness the two-day festival organised by Borshobiday O Boron Parishad which included rendition of songs and dances by local artists and a fair on local food and handicrafts. Our Chittagong University correspondent reports: Pahela Baishakh was greeted with completely open-access programmes of classical music, dance and entertainment in different spots on the lush campus. Jarultala, Muktamancha, Buddijibi Chattar and the museum premises were abuzz with visitors in their hundreds, women clad in coulourful saris and men in panjabis. Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Anwarul Azim Arif led a colourful procession, which was adorned with masks of various shapes and sizes imaginable, at 9:00am with Pro-VC Prof Dr Mohammad Alauddin. The visitors feasted their eyes on captivating programmes including puppet shows, “Boli Khela” (wrestling), “kabadi”, humorous debates, fashion shows, cultural programmes of indigenous communities, drama, dances and concerts.
