US under- secretary Sherman due today

US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman will arrive here today on a two-day official visit. This will be her first visit to Bangladesh since she was appointed Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs on September 21, 2011. Sherman is coming to Dhaka after her four-day visit to India and Kathmandu. Diplomatic sources said political issues of Bangladesh, including caretaker government system and next general election, will come up prominently during Sherman's meeting with the government and opposition high-ups. However, foreign ministry officials termed it a “routine” visit as she is coming here as part of her three nations tour to strengthen bilateral relations. In Dhaka, the under-secretary is due to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other government officials and political leaders and civil society members. As per the schedule, official sources said Wendy Sherman will first hold meeting with the prime minister's Security Adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique this afternoon and call on the prime minister at Gano Bhaban in the evening. She will visit the Grameen Borrower Group site outside of Dhaka tomorrow morning. Sherman is due to meet the foreign minister at state guesthouse Padma tomorrow afternoon and then meet Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence.
