DoE removes two brick kilns
The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined the owners of five brickfields Tk 5.5 lakh in Munshiganj and removed two brickfields in Narial for violating the environmental laws and using drum chimneys.
DoE officials also directed four brickfield owners of Munshiganj to shut their operation and another owner to remove brickfield from Mirkadim municipality area of the district.
DoE Director (enforcement) Mohammad Munir Chowdhury gave the directives while the owners of the brickfields appeared before the DoE headquarters following a call of the department, said a DoE release.
Admitting their offences, the brickfield owners promised to refrain from continuing operation without taking environmental clearance certificates.
Meanwhile, another DoE team removed two brickfields at Kalia of Narial for emitting excessive carbon dioxide by using banned drum chimneys and seized 500 maunds of wood from the brickfields.
DoE Deputy Director Abdullah Hakkani led the drive in association with local police, said another DoE release.
The evicted brickfields--SMB Bricks and Saha Bricks--were destroying biodiversity in the area around the river Modumoti, threatened public health and harmed agricultural production of this area, said the release.
The removal of the brickfields will free the area of 4,000 metric tonnes carbon and polluting save seven acres of farmlands from pollutants.
