Accepting money from defeated forces shameful act, says PM

Unb, Dhaka
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged all to remain vigilant against those who take money from the defeated forces to gain their own interest. “I will request people to remain alert against those who take money from the defeated forces and join with them to take revenge for their defeat,” she said. The prime minister was addressing a meeting with Awami League's grassroots leaders from Sirajganj district at her official residence, Gonobhaban. “It is a shame for the nation to take money from the defeated forces who had committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. “The secret is now out… she (Khaleda) took money from those whom we had defeated in 1971 to do politics,” said Hasina. She again made it clear that there will be no room for militancy and “Bangla Bhai” elements. “Those who siphoned off money and embezzled orphans' money will have to face trial,” Hasina reiterated. Referring to “limitless” corruption during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, Hasina said they had given corruption an institutional shape. “Corruption had spread like a disease…the BNP-Jamaat government destroyed society and the administration through their corruption.” On problems with neighbours, she said the government had already started talks on the Teesta water sharing and other issues and will be able to reach a solution. Hasina also mentioned that the economy was in good shape even when the world was facing an economic turmoil. “That means our steps are working properly,” she said. About electricity, she said the use of power by the masses had increased as their economic condition improved. “That is why the demand is growing with production. And the government has taken numerous steps to boost power generation.” She criticised the BNP-Jamaat alliance and the caretaker government for their failure in producing electricity. Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, AL presidium members Abdul Latif Siddiqui and Kazi Jafarullah, the prime minister's Adviser HT Imam, General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, former minister Mohammad Nasim, AL Organising Secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan and AL central leader and former chief whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah were present at the meeting. Presidents and general secretaries of the upazilas, thanas, municipal and union units under Sirajganj district, AL upazila chairmen and vice-chairmen, municipal mayors and councillors, chairmen of union parishads and presidents and general secretaries of the associate bodies of AL district and upazila units were also present.
