Holy Ashtami Snan (holy bath), a big annual religious festival of the Hindu community ended in Old Brahmaputra River in Langalbandh village in Bandar upazila yesterday morning. Thousands of Hindu devotees from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka took a holy dip in the Old Brahmaputra at dawn yesterday heralding the end of this year's holy bath. Every year on the eighth day of the lunar month which falls in the Bengali month of Chaitra, tens of thousands of devotees from home and abroad assemble on the banks of the Old Brahmaputra for the ritual bath in the river. On the occasion, a three-day fair is held in and around the village, starting before the day of Ashtami Snan and ending a day after the bathing ceremony. This year's Ashtami Snan was held peacefully, the district administration officials claimed. Echoing them, the upazila administration officials said: "No untoward incident took place in Langalbandh or in any other parts of Bandar upazila during the holy bathing and the three-day fair."
