Journalist Habibur Rahman passes away
Veteran journalist Habibur Rahman Sheikh passed away of cancer at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital yesterday. He was 67.
Habibur, editor of Dainik Jahan, The Daily Banglar Darpon and The Daily Economic Post, left behind his mother, wife, a son, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Jamia Islamia Madrasa grounds at Charpara in the town after Zohr prayers where leaders of journalists' organisations, political parties, socio-cultural organisations and district administration officials were present.
A second namaz-e-janaza was held before he was laid to rest at his village residence in Khila of Atpara upazila in Netrakona district.
Earlier his body was taken to Mymensingh Press Club, of which he was a member, where it was kept for an hour for journalists of print and electronic media to pay their last respects.
Son of late Azizur Rahman Sheikh and Noorjahan Begum, Habibur was a post graduate from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and the vice-president of BAU Students' Union from 1967 to 1969.
He became involved in journalism as a student by publishing The Weekly Banglar Darpon in 1972, which was later renamed The Daily Banglar Darpon, published from Netrakona, his home district.
He started publishing Dainik Jahan in 1980 and later became the editor of The Economic Post, published from Dhaka.
The founding secretary of Regional Newspapers Parishad and vice-president of Bangladesh Sangbadpatra Parishad, Habibur also established a school and a college for underprivileged children at his village residence.
