Cops assault 2 Sust students in Sylhet

Two police constables were temporarily suspended for assaulting two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) over a trivial matter in Sylhet city yesterday. The injured, Md Jahangir Alam, student of English department of Sust, and Golam Rabbani, student of Mathematics department of Sust, took aid at the university medical centre. Witnesses said, while waiting for bus at a bus stand at Chowhatta in the city around 1:00pm, the duo went to sit in the bench there. However, policemen at the spot barred them, saying that the bench was meant for use by police. When the duo challenged the notion, the policemen assaulted them, witnesses added. Hearing the incident, the university authorities informed the matter to the Sylhet police commissioner. Later, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ataur Rahman went to the Sust campus and apologised to the victims for the incident on behalf of the accused policemen. He also informed that two of the accused constables, Kamrul and Al-Amin, have been temporarily suspended and a divisional action against them is under process.
