2010 Vandalism
Ctg ward councillor arrested
Police arrested a ward councillor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), also a Jamaat-e-Islami leader, on Friday night on charge of attacking police and doing vandalism during a 2010 protest in the port city.
Shamsuzzaman Helali, councillor of Sulakbahar ward, is an accused in a case filed over the incident, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge, Panchlaish Police Station.
Panchlaish police arrested him at his residence in Badurtala area on secret information, and later handed him over to Kotwali police, who said Helali had long been absconding.
Around 150 men have already been arrested in connection with the incident, said Sajib Das, inspector (investigation), Kotwali Police Station.
On February 13, 2010, leaders and activists of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir clashed with police during a procession, which they brought out protesting the killing of a "Shibir student" at Chittagong University. Some 30 people, including 12 cops, were injured in the clash.
Police had filed three cases with Kotwali, Panchlaish, and Doublemooring police stations against 2,500 Jamaat-Shibir men for attacking police and disrupting law and order.
