Around 300 million people across the globe will be displaced by the end of this century due to climate change, said noted environmental scientist Dr Atiq Rahman yesterday. Terming the effects of climate change the greatest threat to mankind, he said people will suffer the most due to this displacement. He was speaking at a workshop for journalists on climate change organised by an international climate champion of British Council at its auditorium in the city. “The outmost impact of climate change can be measured on the water sector --around 60 to 70 percent of the total impact. It causes flash floods, drought spells and wrong timing of rainfalls,” said Atiq, executive director of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS). He stressed the need for reducing greenhouse gas emission effectively to address the challenges of climate change, he said. Noted health expert Dr Iqbal Kabir said Bangladesh will have to bear an extra burden of US $ 2.8 billion from 2010 to 2021 on climate change related health complications. The outbreak of cholera, diarrhoea and other diseases will increase and the number of malnourished people will rise sharply, said Iqbal, coordinator of Climate Change and Health Promotion Unit of the health ministry. Shamsud Doha, executive director of Centre for Participatory Research and Development, alleged that developed countries, in the disbursement of climate change fund, are doing an injustice to the less developed ones. Department of Environment Deputy Director Mirza Shawkat Ali, BCAS Research fellow Golam Rabbani and British Council International Climate Champion Hasan Abdullah Towhid also spoke at the workshop. Around fifty young journalists from different print and electronic media attended the workshop.
