Speakers, at a discussion yesterday, said the government authorities concerned are not serious about saving the water bodies, which play a major role in maintaining the ecological balance. They also urged all to work together to save the water bodies of the port city of Chittagong. Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) organised the discussion at a local restaurant in the city. East Delta University Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Sikandar Khan, while addressing as the chief guest, said “Water bodies are going under the threat of pollution and illegal grabbing everyday.” Dr Shah Alam, professor of Zoology Department of Chittagong University (CU), said, “Ground level water is decreasing. So, we have to save other natural sources of water and water bodies for fulfilling our day to day water demands as well that of the future generation.” However, Department of Environment (Chittagong) Director Jafar Alam said, “The manpower is too insufficient to take care of the water bodies.” Dr Kamal Hossain, professor of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Science of CU, said water bodies are being filled up in a large extent everyday for urbanisation, housing business and waste disposal. Another professor of the institute Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin chaired the meeting while Fire Service and Civil Defence, Chittagong Assistant Director Jashim Uddin, Chittagong City Corporation Councillor Ferdous Ara and Advocate Rehena Begum Ranu, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Director Syed Sagir Ahmed, Institute of Engineers, Chittagong Chairman Engr Mohammad Harun and Bela Divisional Coordinator Advocate Anwarul Islam Chowdhury attended the event among others.
