The citizens' investigation committee formed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday in its report blamed “police intolerance” for the killing of four opposition men in Chandpur and Laxmipur on January 29. It asked the authorities concerned to take punitive actions against the police officials responsible for the killing. The committee also made some recommendations, including compensating the bereaved families and transferring the police officials of both the districts for the sake of a fair investigation. “A case has been filed with the chief judicial magistrate's court on behalf of the victims' families,” stated the investigation report. On January 29, Chandpur and Laxmipur police opened fire on processions brought out by the main opposition as part of their countrywide demonstration which claimed four lives. The next day Khaleda Zia formed the citizen body. Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, also the convenor of the citizen committee, yesterday disclosed the probe report at a press briefing at the Jatiya Press Club.
