Working Children, Teenagers
12,500 to get decent jobs
The European Union and Save the Children Bangladesh jointly launched a three-year project yesterday, aiming to improve the lives of the country's working children and teenagers.
The programme will rehabilitate some 12,500 vulnerable children and teenagers aged 5 to 18, who live in Dhaka city, to decent jobs from hazardous works.
Among them 1,500 children and teenagers aged 14 to 18 will receive training, which would be tailored to their needs and satisfy the job market.
There are around 74 lakh working children in the ages between 5 and 17 years in Bangladesh and nearly 13 lakh children work under hazardous conditions.
The project, "Partnerships to Combat Child Labour through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Bangladesh", will cost Tk 12.5 crore. The EU will finance 80 percent of the cost.
Two local partner NGOs--Society for Underprivileged Families (SUF) and Community Participation and Development (CPD)--are implementing the project with Save the Children.
