Robber drowns during coast guard chase

An alleged robber drowned during an operation by coast guards in the Bay of Bengal in Chittagong early yesterday. Chased by the law enforcers, three robbers travelling on a boat jumped into the sea around 2:30am, said Bangladesh Coast Guard officials. However, the coast guards captured the trio -- Md Saheen, 27, Md Khalilur Rahman, 30, and Md Siraj, 42, Lt Commander Md Yusuf of the force told The Daily Star. Injured Saheen was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 6:00am where doctors declared him dead, said constable Sanjay Kumar of CMCH police outpost. The coast guard members seized a machete, two knives and 100 metres of berthing rope worth Tk 1 lakh from the robbers' boat.
