One killed, 30 hurt in clash over salt field
A man was killed and 30 were injured yesterday during a clash over occupying a salt field in Kutubdia upazila of Cox's Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, 27, of Tabolerchar village of the upazila.
The clash took place when Md Babul of the same village allegedly tried to forcibly take control of a 15-acre salt field belonging to Baktiar Alam, a union parishad member.
Abdullah al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Kutubdia Police Station, said the clash ensued when farmers working on the field resisted a group of at least 10 armed goons, hired by Babul, as they tried to occupy the field.
At one stage, the criminals opened fire on the farmers leaving Rahman dead on the spot. Of the 30 injured, 14 sustained bullet wounds and were admitted to a local hospital.
As the news spread, hundreds of villagers chased the criminals and managed to catch seven of the goons and beat them up.
The seven are accused in different robbery cases, said police, adding that they had been admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.
