Jagannath University Clash
1,200 sued
Nearly 1,200 students and traders were sued late on Wednesday night in two cases filed in connection with the clash between the Jagannath University students and traders of Patuatuli market.
Meanwhile, the university authorities yesterday formed a seven-member body to probe the incident that left a man dead and 20 others injured. The committee will place its report in seven workdays.
The authorities also held a meeting with trader leaders to discuss ways to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Nazmul Huda, a sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, filed the police case against the students and traders for assaulting police, obstructing them from discharging their duties and creating anarchy in the area.
Proctor of the university Kamal Uddin Ahmed filed the second case with the Kotwali police against 500 to 600 traders and shop workers for vandalising the university's property during the clash.
Contacted, Salauddin Khan, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said nobody was arrested in this connection as of yesterday evening.
The university authorities have already suspended six students, all activists of pro-Awami League student body Chhatra League, for their involvement in the clash.
The clash erupted on Wednesday afternoon when a staff of Nur Optics in the market resisted the six, who attempted to take away six sunglasses without paying for them.
At one stage of the clashes, a 65-year-old sweeper of a bank died of suffocation when police fired teargas canisters to disperse the clashers.
