Police arrested an alleged arms trader and recovered a foreign pistol, three light guns and five rounds of bullets from his possession in the port city on Tuesday. The arrestee was Mofiz Uddin, 32, hailed from Baraghop village in Cox's Bazar and residing at Mirpara in the city, police told journalists yesterday. Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive in Surson Road area around 5:30pm on Tuesday and arrested Mofiz. Swadip Kumar Das, inspector of Kotwali Police Station, said, “We arrested Mofiz when he was handing over a bag containing the arms and ammunitions to another person.” The other person, however, managed to flee the scene. Mofiz, at the press briefing at Kotwali Police Station yesterday, said he did not know as to what was in the bag. His neighbour Babul kept the bag in his house earlier and told him over the phone to go to Surson Road area to hand over the bag to a person. “Babul, who is an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong Polytechnic College unit, and his fellow Zakir used to keep this type of bags in my residence on and off,” said Mofiz. An arms case was filed with Kotwali Police Station in this connection.
