Grooming of 70 debaters begins in Chittagong

A two-month-long debate workshop, “Star Campus-Drishty School of Debate”, was launched in Chittagong city yesterday aiming at grooming 70 schoolchildren in the practice of logic and the art of debating. The Daily Star and Drishty Chittagong, a cultural organisation of the city, jointly organised the training. Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, inaugurated the launching ceremony at Theatre Institute in Chittagong as chief guest. The significance of logic is so vital that there is no alternative to it in attaining success in life, said Mahfuz Anam. “The world is moving ahead and therefore we need to grow as global citizens and in order to be global citizens, we need to ignite the spirit of logic. The practice of debate in English will simply open the door to our destination,” he said. Drishty Chittagong Founder Adviser Bilkis Rashed, chairing the ceremony, said the present generation must reflect on everything with logic to achieve success in every area of life. Chittagong University marketing department Chairman Prof Ahsanul Alam Parvez said, “We are going through moments of great crisis in our national life. “We are moving forward on seeing the illusion of some false hopes and bright balloons of dreams, but we do not know the consequences. As a result, to avoid any drastic failure, we need to be realistic and being logical human beings is just the perfect match.” Drishty Chittagong President Kashaful Hoque and founder of Drishty Chittagong Masud Bakul were also present at the ceremony. The participating students are from 10 schools, namely, CIDER International School, Sunshine Grammar School, Chittagong Grammar School, Child Heaven School, Cantonment English School, Silver Bells Girls' High School, Bangladesh Elementary School, Presidency International School, Mastermind International School and William Carey Academy.
